На филологическом факультете прошел научный семинар о целях, задачах и процессах академического письма

28 февраля 2023 г. стартовал цикл семинаров, посвященных особенностям работы над научными материалами на английском языке. Первую встречу провел преподаватель кафедры массовых коммуникаций Мустафа М. Джамиу.

Преподаватель рассказал о целях и важности цикла семинаров для слушателей – студентов магистратуры, особенно для магистрантов второго года обучения, которые в настоящее время работают над своими выпускными работами. Преподаватель также отметил, что работа на семинарах будет практической, основанной на текущей научной работе студентов.

Далее участников познакомили с определением академического письма, его видами, целью и особенностями. Как отметил Мустафа, «академический стиль письма отличается от других стилей письма, таких как эссе, отчет, новостная заметка или литературный роман. Как правило, академическое письмо требует точности, объективности, ясности, учета интересов читателей и т.д.». Спикер рассказал о структуре академического письма: на примерах он рассказал и о структурной разнице короткого письма, длинного письма и диссертации.

В конце семинара преподаватель ответил на вопросы участников, например, о разнице между внутритекстовыми и концевыми сносками в академическом письме и правилах их использования, особенно в соответствии с требованиями РУДН.

On the 28th of February 2020, the Department of Mass Communication kicked off a monthly seminar tagged “Academic Writing Clinic”, a series for graduate students in English.

The series opened with the title “Academic Writing: structure and brainstorming” by the course lecturer, Mustapha Muhammed Jamiu, a lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication. The course attendants comprised the first and second-year students of the “Global and Digital Media” Master’s program.


The instructor opened the seminar with the introduction of the course, session outlines, and the importance of the clinic for the attendants as graduate students and particularly the second-year Master’s students among them who are currently working on their thesis. The instructor further noted that the clinic will be more practical-based than theoretical from the participant's ongoing piece of work or dissertation.

Starting the clinic, Mustapha distributed test material to participants and asked them to work in pairs. The material aimed at testing the participants’ understanding of Academic Writing key goals, purposes and processes which took the mode of explaining what they got wrong and what they got right in the form of interaction.

Participants were further introduced to the definition of academic writing, its types, purpose and features. As Mustapha noted, “academic writing style is different from other styles of writing like an essay, report, newspaper or novel. Generally, Academic writing requires accuracy, objectivity, clarity, consideration of readers etc”.

Among the key purposes of the academic writing the instructor exposed the participants to are:
• to report a piece of research the writer has conducted;
• to discuss the subject of common interest and give the writer’s view;
• to synthesise research done by others on a topic.
The instructor also took the students through the structure of academic writing and clarify what differentiates it from other types of writing. He looked at short writing, long writing, and dissertation/journal articles.

The clinic ended with reactions, questions and answers from the participants such as the difference between the footnote and endnote referencing in academic writing and when they are applicable especially with RUDN requirements which the instructor explained thoroughly.
